Throughout the summer, the Gazette-Journal is featuring the many campgrounds in Gloucester and Mathews counties; places where old-fashioned family vacations are still enjoyed. This week: Gwynn’s Island RV Resort in Mathews.

The Gwynn’s Island RV Resort and Campground, last but not least in the Gazette-Journal series, is the perfect spot for those wishing to get away from it all.

Brian Cirelli, district manager for Sun RV Resorts, which manages the campground, said the Gwynn’s Island resort has come a long way since Sun RV took over in 2013 and touts the campground for its gorgeous views and amazing fishing opportunities.

“It used to be more or less just a small fishing camp,” Cirelli said. “We’re trying to get it to become more than that.”

The Gwynn’s Island RV Resort and Campground has 120 campsites and a large tent-camping area.
