Michael W. Spankowski, of Gloucester, born Nov. 27, 1967, died at the age of 44 on Jan. 1, 2012.

He grew up in Hampton and was a graduate of Phoebus High School. He worked for Ford Motor Company for many years until leaving to start his own company, H2O Joes which he had operated for the last four years.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Irene Zurek, and Leslie and Aleen Gilmore; his step-mother, Barbara Spankowski; and his step-grandfather, Archer Vernon Vann Sr.

Survivors include his daughter, Katie Smith; his parents, Stan Spankowski and Mary Vann and her husband Vernon; his step-grandmother, Margaret Vann; three sisters, Laura Mallory and her husband James, Stephanie Hall, and Sheri Vann; three brothers, Stas Spankowski, Mike Hayes and his wife Tracey, and Pat Hayes and his wife Karrie, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012 in the R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home chapel in Hampton by the Rev. James Cowles. The family will receive friends following the service until 7:30 p.m.
