Michael “Mike” Broocke Dobson, 72, of Hayes, born on August 5, 1953, passed away on Friday, January 30, 2026, surrounded by love and family after a brief battle with lung cancer. Mike grew up in Gaithersburg, Maryland, where he formed lifelong friendships that remained a cherished part of his life. He graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 1971, earned his associate degree from Montgomery College in 1973, and received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Old Dominion University in 1975. In November 1976, the year the Chesapeake Bay famously froze over, Mike began his career as a Marine Police Officer with the Virginia Marine Resources Commission. He served first in the Northern Neck and later in the Middle Peninsula, dedicating himself to protecting Virginia’s waterways until his retirement in 2009. His work brought him great purpose and pride, including memorable moments such as assisting in the rescue of Coast Guard personnel after their vessel became entangled in their own towline with a barge in tow. After retiring from the Marine Police, Mike continued to serve his community as a part-time courtroom bailiff with the Hampton Sheriff’s Office and as a member of Abingdon Church’s Pastoral Care Team. His dedication to helping others never wavered, even in retirement. Mike found joy in simple, meaningful pleasures, reminiscing with family and friends about his childhood memories, especially with his parents and friends in Gaithersburg and summers on the York River. He cherished spending time golfing, walking in Yorktown, and relaxing at his favorite beach on the Outer Banks. These moments brought him peace and happiness throughout his life. Michael’s life was defined by service, loyalty, and deep devotion to the people he loved, especially Judy, his wife of 27 years, and his beloved daughter, Lauren. He will be remembered for his unwavering support, kindness, and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him. The family will receive friends at Hogg Funeral Home on Thursday, February 5, 2026, from 5:30-7 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Abingdon Episcopal Church on Friday, February 6, 2026, at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev.
