MHS wrestling gets off to a strong start

The Mathews High School wrestling season kicked off Dec. 6 with the team’s participation in the annual Lafayette Re/Max Ram Cup. MHS finished fifth as a team, according to Blue Devil head coach Frank Taylor.

Cody Correll (152 lbs.) went 5-0 on the day, and Parker Thompson (138 lbs.) went 4-0, with both taking first place in their respective weight classes. Harrison Cullison (4-1), Sam Moore (145 lbs., 3-1) and Isaiah Maultsby (195 lbs., 3-1) took second place. Caleb Johnson (126 lbs., 2-2) and Dominick Cummings (220 lbs., 1-2) finished in fourth place.

On Dec. 10, the team traveled to Northampton to challenge Nandua and the home-standing Yellow Jackets. Mathews beat the two Eastern Shore teams, crushing Nandua, 51-18, and defeating Northampton, 40-30.

On Saturday, Mathews traveled to Randolph-Henry High School for a set of four duals meets. Mathews won all four, beating King and Queen 66-0, Norfolk Collegiate 57-18, Dan River 55-18, Norcom 60-18, and the host Statesmen, 66-12....
