MHS wrestlers win conference

The Mathews High School wrestling team placed first in the Conference 42 tournament last Wednesday, after defeating both King and Queen (66-3) and the host Middlesex Chargers (60-18).

Individual standouts for Mathews included Caleb Sadler, Caleb Johnson, Parker Thompson, Sam Moore, Cody Correll, Thomas Hall, Mason Fiscella, Joe Hall, Isaiah Maultsby and Bill Riley, who all placed first, and Dominick Cummings and Bryan Smith, who both took second. Moore, Hall and Maultsby got two pins each. Fiscella, Sadler, Thompson, Cummings and Riley had one pin apiece.

The Mathews wrestlers will take part in the Region 1A East tournament, which will be held on Friday at Parry McCluer High School in Buena Vista. The state tournament begins the following Thursday, Feb. 19 at the Salem Civic Center....
