MHS wrestlers sweep home quad meet

Mathews High School wrestling had a busy week, juggling a home quad against Southampton, Northampton, and Essex High School last Wednesday, as well as a two-day showing at the Ram Rumble held at Lafayette High School. The team showed tremendous talent at both events.

On Wednesday, the Blue Devils won against all three visiting teams. The final scores were 42-25 against Southampton High, 46-30 to Essex, and ending the night with a 47-36 win against Northampton. Junior Andre Smith Jr. had a 2-1 record on Wednesday night due to having two forfeits. Sophomore Zac Salvadori was able to pull off a tech fall against his Northampton opponent.

After a successful run on Wednesday night, the team traveled to Lafayette High School to compete against multiple teams including some 6A schools. Franklin Cardenas started the team off with its first win for the weekend, winning by a tech fall after pushing almost all three periods. His brother, Salvador Cardenas, managed to pin his second opponent in 34 seconds.

Ivan Schaible placed fourth out of a 32-man bracket for the 157-lb. weight class. Schaible was the only 1A wrestler to place in the whole tournament. Overall, the team placed 25th out of 32 teams.

Mathews was scheduled to host a quad meet on Wednesday, but with the snow day, that event was canceled. The MHS wrestlers travel to Midlothian on Saturday to compete in the Cosby High School Duals, the final dual match of the season.
