MHS wrestlers sweep home quad meet

The Mathews High School wrestling team completed a dense schedule of competition this past week, competing in six matches over two days.

The Blue Devils split their results during a multi-team event at Gloucester last Tuesday before returning home to sweep a quad match the following evening, gaining valuable mat time as the post-season approaches.

The stretch began on Jan. 20 at Gloucester High School. Mathews opened the session with a 37-35 loss against Gloucester, in a competitive match that remained undecided until the final stages. The team then faced Western Branch where they ended in a 50-15 loss. The night concluded with a 49-30 win over Churchland.

The Blue Devils found their rhythm the following evening, Jan. 21, during a home quad match. The team put together a consistent performance, defeating Lancaster, 43-21, and following up with a 44-29 victory over Rappahannock. Mathews closed out the night by defeating Middlesex, 54-21, ending the two-day stint with a 4-2 overall record.

The focus has now shifted to the post-season. Mathews was scheduled to host the district tournament yesterday; however, that has been postponed until next Wednesday, Feb. 4. MHS will host the regional tournament on Saturday, Feb. 7, with the state tournament on Friday, Feb. 20 at the Salem Civic Center.
