MHS wrestlers place second in home invitational

Mathews High School placed second out of nine teams competing in Saturday’s Mathews Invitational. Norview won the tournament with a score of 193.5, followed by the host Devils (142 points), Essex (111), Lafayette (101), Bruton (93), L.C. Bird (87), Grafton (73), York (70) and Franklin (68).

Mathews had five wrestlers advance to the title round, with two, Parker Thompson and Sam Moore, winning their final bouts. Thompson, at 132 pounds, scored an 8-1 decision over Jesse Chambliss of L.C. Bird for the title. Moore pinned Conner Wrann of Lafayette in 1:59.

Also making it to the championships were Harrison Cullison (152 lbs.), Joe Hall (182 lbs.) and Bill Riley (285 lbs.). Cullison lost a 12-5 bout to Norview’s Jeremiah Cuffee; Hall fell in a 12-9 decision to Joshua Morrison, also of Norview; and Riley lost in OT to Terrence Hall of Essex, 7-4.
