MHS wrestlers place in Titan Classic

It was a strange night for the Mathews High School varsity wrestling team last Wednesday.

The Devils traveled to Suffolk to face Northampton and host the Bulldogs from Kings Fork, tying both teams by identical 39-39 scores, but ending up on the losing side both times due to tie-breaker criteria.

Winners for Mathews against Northampton included Caleb Miller (106 lbs., pin in 3:44), Billy Bower (160 lbs., pin in :18), A.J. White (170 lbs., won in triple overtime, 11-10) and Willie Moore (285 lbs., pin in :27). Jared Inge (182 lbs.), Austin Fravel (195 lbs.) and James Pavik (220 lbs.) accepted forfeit victories.

Against Kings Fork, there were only seven matches due to forfeits. Sean Rhodes (126 lbs.) was losing 4-2 to Richawn Turner in the third period when he scored an escape and a takedown, putting Turner on his back for the pin. Matt Rouland (132 lbs.) won a close decision, 7-6. Bower pinned his opponent in 3:19.
