Mathews High School hosted its annual Mathews Invitational last Thursday, with eight teams competing. Mathews finished fourth, with three third-place finishers, three placing second and one individual champion, James Pavik.
Cape Henry Collegiate, a school from Virginia Beach, won the tournament with a team score of 180, followed by Menchville (161.5 points), Northumberland (142), Mathews (139), Lafayette (135), King William (116), Warhill (108.5) and Franklin (41). Two other teams—York and Maury—had originally been scheduled to compete, but backed out due to snow.
Pavik, wrestling at 189 lbs., went 3-0 on the day. He pinned Tanner Baine of Cape Henry Collegiate in 3:36 in the championship bout. Pavik was losing half way through the second period when he threw Baine with a head and arm; 30 seconds later, he got the pin.
