The Mathews High School wrestling team opened its 2015-2016 season with a meet on Friday at Northampton High School and Saturday’s Ram Cup Invitational at Lafayette High School.

In Friday’s meet, the Blue Devils lost by a 33-36 score to Nandua and lost to the host Yellow Jackets, 36-45. Mason Fiscella, Caleb Sadler, Parker Thompson and Michael Dion Davis Ruskovitz won by pin in the Nandua match. Against Northampton, Fiscella, Sadler, Caleb Johnson and Thompson scored pins.

The following day, the team traveled to Williamsburg to compete in the Ram Cup. Mathews tied for seventh place with Varina, with both teams scoring 89 points. 

Salem was the overall winner with 205 team points, followed by the host Rams (156 points) and Gloucester (154.5 points). Mathews had two second-place finishers and a champion.
