The Mathews High School wrestling team had an exceptional week, first showcasing its strength in dual meets last Wednesday with commanding victories over Northumberland High School (77-6) and Franklin High School (60-12).
The success continued into the weekend at the Peninsula Catholic tournament, where senior Ivan Schaible achieved a major milestone by recording his 100th career win in the first match, and then secured every subsequent victory each by tech fall.
Schaible, along with teammates Franklin Cardenas and Jesse Monastyrly, placed first in their respective weight classes. The Cardenas family saw more success as Salvador Cardenas and Eric Cardenas both secured a second-place finish, followed by Grayson Patterson with a third-place finish.
Fueled by these outstanding individual performances, the Mathews High School team placed third overall in the highly competitive tournament.
