MHS wrestlers beat Nandua, Norfolk Christian, lost to hosts, in quad meet

Mathews High traveled to Norfolk Collegiate last Wednesday for a quad meet, losing to the host Oaks, 45-34, but defeating Nandua (55-21) and Norfolk Christian (60-24).

Two MHS wrestlers—Caleb Miller (106 lbs.) and Eric Johnson (145 lbs.)—went 3-0 in the quad, winning all their bouts by pins. Freshman Sam Moore (120 lbs.) also had a strong showing, winning his two bouts by pin.

The Devils went to Franklin on Saturday to compete in the Franklin Duals. Ten teams competed in two pools of five teams in a round robin format, with the winner of each pool wrestling for first- and second-place trophies.

"We had hopes of winning our pool and getting into the finals, but were disappointed, losing the first dual to Southampton in a very close match, 40-39," MHS wrestling coach Tom Holaday said.
