As the Mathews High wrestling team opens its season with the largest team they have seen over the past few years, they kicked off with a tri-match at Northumberland High School on Dec. 4. The MHS wrestlers defeated the Indians by a score of 66-12, and took an upsetting loss to Franklin High School with a close score of 42-39.Along with the large numbers on the roster this year, two of those participants are the first girls to join since 2022, sophomores Ashton O’Leary and Vanessa Boyd. The last girl to compete on the MHS wrestling team was former state runner-up Alexis Deagle. With O’Leary being at 106 and Boyd at the 113 spot, they are filling in what used to be empty spots for these weight classes.
