MHS wrestlers beat Franklin, fall to York

Bivins also defeated his York opponent in last week’s tri-meet.

The Mathews High School wrestling team held its final regular season meet last Wednesday, competing against teams from Franklin and York.

The MHS wrestlers split the pair of contests, beating Franklin by a 44-30 margin and falling to York, 43-27. Wrestlers going 2-0 on the night were Aaron Miles (132 lbs.), Tyler Schaller (138 lbs.), Cody Deagle (145 lbs.), Isaiah Bivins (152 lbs.) and Tanner Schaller (160 lbs.).

Feb. 5 was a big night for Bivins. Not only did he pick up two wins, his victory over the wrestler from Franklin marked his 100th career victory as a Blue Devil wrestler. He was also one of four MHS wrestlers recognized during the evening’s Senior Night program. Other seniors recognized were Miles, Tanner Schaller (160 lbs.) and Quinton Dixon (182 lbs.).

Mathews wrestlers will travel to Riverheads on Friday for this weekend’s 1A/B Super Regional Tournament, looking to secure a place in the VHSL State Championships, which will be held on Feb. 21-22 at the Salem Civic Center.
