MHS wrestlers beat Eagles, Cavaliers

The Mathews High School wrestling team picked up a pair of wins last Wednesday night in a dual match at King William. Mathews defeated the Washington and Lee Eagles, 55-18, and the host Cavaliers, 40-33, according to head coach Frank Taylor.

Notable pins in the contest included Tyler Zabel’s defeat of Keith Feller (W&L) in 23 seconds; Isaiah Maultsby over Luis Maldano (W&L) in 26 seconds; Sam Moore over Anthony Gray (King William) in 1:39 and Bill Riley over David Shields (King William) in 56 seconds. MHS wrestlers will travel to Mills Godwin High School in Richmond on Saturday to compete in the Godwin Holiday Classic. The Devils will host a tournament the following Saturday, Jan. 3, beginning at 10 a.m. Other teams scheduled to compete include King and Queen, York, Essex, Lafayette, Lloyd C. Bird, Grafton, Bruton and Franklin....
