MHS women’s varsity double third at Al Urquia

The Mathews High School crew traveled to Occoquan on Saturday to compete in the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Association’s Al Urquia Regatta.

Three Mathews boats competed, and the only boat to medal for Mathews was the women’s varsity double, which took bronze.

There were 1,400 athletes and 18 school teams in attendance, making it a very competitive spring regatta. First to race were novices Landon Hudgins and Fletcher Rich in the men’s varsity double where they placed third in their heat which advanced them to the finals. The boys went on to place fifth in the final, holding off an entry from J.E.B. Stuart. The Lady Devils’ competition saw Taylor Hummel and Katelyn James launch their double to race against Western Albemarle, Oakton and Potomac to qualify for the final. Placing second behind W. Albemarle, the girls advanced to the finals where they pulled a third-place finish behind St. Agnes and W. Albemarle and ahead of Oakton and Gar-Field.
