MHS wins opener in Christmas Tournament

After last Thursday’s home game against Lancaster was cancelled due to snow, the Mathews High School varsity girls’ basketball team traveled to Middlesex for Tuesday’s opening round of the annual Middlesex Christmas Tournament.

The Lady Devils defeated Washington and Lee, 66-42. Mathews came out strong at the start, scoring the first points off the opening jump ball. Mathews also showed an increased level of intensity on the defensive side of the ball, forcing the Lady Eagles into wild, unorthodox shots and limiting them to one shot per possession.

On offense, Mathews created great attempts at the basket against the Lady Eagles’ defense by consistently moving the ball around, looking for the open person. Toward the end of the third quarter, W&L switched to a man-to-man defense which temporarily shut down the Lady Devils’ offense until the fourth quarter.
