MHS volleyball teams beat Indians, Eagles

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team picked up a pair of wins during the week, beating Northern Neck foes Northumberland and Washington and Lee in straight sets.

The junior varsity Lady Devils also posted victories over the Indians and Eagles—including a thrilling win over Northumberland last Thursday, rallying after losing the first set to take the next two for the team’s first victory of the season.

The JV girls picked up their first win of the season last Thursday, but it wasn’t easy. After losing the first set, 22-25, the MHS girls came back to beat Northumberland in the second set, 25-20, and took the win in the third and decisive set, 15-12.

Leading the team in kills for the night was Lois Beale with five, followed by Katelynn Blake and Emily West with one apiece. Skyller Worley led the team with five aces and five assists, followed by Beale with two aces. Jordan Huntley added two solo blocks in the game. “The girls had great ...
