MHS volleyball opens season at York

The Mathews High School volleyball teams had their first games of the regular season last Thursday, as the Lady Devils traveled to York High School to face the Falcons.

MHS split the two contests, with the junior varsity girls falling in two straight sets while the varsity team picked up a 3-1 victory.

The varsity Devils started off strong, winning the first sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-20. After dropping the third set, 21-25, the MHS girls bounced back to take the victory in the fourth and final set by a 25-12 margin.

Leading the team in kills was Anne Stewart with 10, followed by Victoria Bing and Caroline Crittenden with six each. Tori Hicks added nine digs in the win, followed by Crittenden with eight, Mia Gillenwater with seven, and Belle Massimino with six. Massimino led the team in assists with 27, while Gillenwater added one. Hicks had six aces, followed by Massimino with three, and Stewart and Bing with two.
