MHS volleyball hitting its stride

The Mathews High School volleyball teams are on a roll, picking up wins this week over King William and West Point. The varsity and JV girls also took part in the weekend’s Endless Summer tournament in Virginia Beach.

Last Thursday, the junior varsity girls took their fourth win in thrilling, come-from-behind fashion against the visiting King William Cavaliers. After dropping the first set 25-14 margin, the girls came back strong in the second to win, 25-18. In the third and final set, Mathews trailed early but rallied to win, 15-13.

Katelynn Blake led the team in aces with seven, followed by Cassidy Correll with four, and Emily West with two. Aleya McCurry had four assists, Skyller Worley added three, and Blake with one. Jada Ashberry led in kills with four, followed by Lois Beale (three), Blake (two) and Correll (one). Ashberry added a solo block.
