MHS volleyball goes 2-1 in recent action

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team added a pair of wins and suffered a single loss this past week.

Last Thursday, the Lady Devils traveled to Northumberland for a rematch of their season opener with the Indians. Mathews won that initial contest in a very heated, hard-fought battle of five sets of play. The table was turned this time, however, with Northumberland winning the match in three straight sets.

The Indians came out strong and won the first two sets rather easily (25-10 and 25-18) against a Mathews team that seemed to be out of sync. The Devils started the third set looking pretty good and seemed to be pulling themselves together. However, the Indians never gave up, they fought hard and eventually took the set, 26-24, sending Mathews home with a disappointing loss.

Kai McCann led the team in both kills and digs with 13 and 12, respectively. She was followed in kills by Madison South with four and in digs by Keely Crittenden with 11, South with seven, and Josey B...
