MHS volleyball beats Essex, falls to Indians

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team started off its 2013 season right, with a 3-0 victory over Essex last Thursday. However, the MHS girls couldn’t keep up the momentum on Tuesday at Northumberland, falling to the Indians in five games.

In last week’s season opener, Mathews dominated the visiting Lady Trojans, winning 25-17, 25-16 and 25-17. Leading the team with kills was Hannah Rowe with six, Jacqueline Stewart and Kai McCann each with five, Kayla Carter with three and Hailey Abernathy and Whitney Eriksen with one each. Stewart and Anna Hudgins led the team with five digs each, while Rowe had three, Abernathy with two, and Eriksen, Mariah Robinson and Brittany Mitchem each had one. Rowe served great throughout the contest with seven aces. Hudgins followed with four, Stewart and Keely Crittenden added two each while McCann scored one ace. Sophie Bandurco had 15 assists and Crittenden contributed three.
