MHS volleyball beats Cavs, Tigers, falls to Dukes

The Mathews High School varsity volleyball team added two wins this week with victories over King William and King and Queen and were handed a single loss by the Gloucester Dukes. The Lady Devils are now 14-5 overall on the season with a 3-1 conference record.

Last Thursday, Mathews hosted the King William Cavaliers. MHS won the match in three sets, by scores of 25-6, 25-14 and 25-20. Kai McCann led the team in kills with seven followed by Madison South (six), Brittany Mitchem and Anne Stewart (three each) and Morgan Driskell and Hallie Duncan (two apiece).

Keely Crittenden led the way in digs with four, followed by McCann, Sophie Bandurco, South, and Allison Foster with three each, and Mitchem with two. Bandurco and South each were credited with 12 assists for the match. McCann had a team-leading five aces.

On Monday night, Mathews traveled to neighboring Gloucester to face the Dukes. MHS won the first battle of the season between the two teams in an extremely tough contest. Monday night’s match proved to be tough as well, with Gloucester prevailing this time in four sets, 26-24, 25-22, 13-25 and 25-18. McCann once again led the team in kills with 18, followed by Robinson with four, and South and Driskell with three. Bandurco led in assists with 15, followed by South with 13. Crittenden led in digs with 15 while South had 14, Belle Massimino had 12 and McCann had 11. McCann served three aces during the match while South served two.

Finally, Mathews traveled to King and Queen on Tuesday evening where they defeated the Tigers, 25-5, 25-11 and 25-10. South served six aces on the night while Allison Foster served five, Sabrina Barrack served four, Massimino served three, and Emily Sorey and Bandurco each served two.  Bandurco contributed 14 assists followed by South with nine and Josey Bauby with five. Mitchem led the way in kills with eight, followed by Massimino with five, and South and McCann with four. South led the team in digs with two.

JV Devils

The JV Lady Devils, meanwhile, posted two wins this week, beating King William and King and Queen. MHS defeated King William last Thursday night in two sets, 25-6 and 25-20.

Harley Haydon led the team in kills with four followed by Madisyn Jackson with three and Caroline Crittenden with two. Emily Carmine led in assists with seven, followed by Kate Respress. Aces were served by Tori Hicks (four), Carmine (two), and Victoria Bing and Sarah Brown (one each).

Mathews traveled to King and Queen Tuesday evening where they defeated the Tigers in two sets, 25-14 and 25-9. Brown led the team in assists with five while Carmine added three. Haydon again led in kills with four. Jackson served five aces during the match while Mitchem served four, Ashley Shackelford and Hicks each served two, and Carmine, Crittenden, Haydon, Hannah Mathias, Brown, and Taylor Locey added one apiece.

The Mathews High School volleyball teams will host West Point on Tuesday and travel to Middlesex next Thursday, Oct. 30, to face the Chargers in the regular season finale. JV games begin at 6 o’clock both nights, with varsity immediately following.
