MHS varsity starts to jell

Although Mathews has still not picked up its first win, the varsity boys’ basketball team is showing steady improvement. The team faced some tough opponents this week, losing to Gloucester, Northumberland and Rappahannock.

Last Wednesday, the Devils took on AAA rival Gloucester. With both teams going into the game winless, some thought the matchup would be a close one. But the bigger and faster Dukes took control from the opening tipoff.

Each time the Dukes scored a basket, the Devils would have trouble inbounding the ball against the Dukes’ full court press. After multiple turnovers, the Devils started to run plays on offense but the Gloucester defense was too overpowering, leading the homestanding Dukes to a 65-32 victory.

Leading scorer for the night was Deondre Foster with 10 points, followed by Deon Blake with seven, Dayshon Williamson with six, Joey Gordon, Ian Smith, Cody Kelly and Xavien Boone with two points apiece and Paul Burnette with one.
