MHS varsity, JV girls unbeaten

The Mathews High School girls’ varsity and junior varsity basketball teams got underway during the past week, combining to go 6-0 in the opening week of play.

Facing a very demanding early schedule, teams will play eight different schools in a 14-day span leading into the holidays. A tough early schedule combined with the late-season run by the volleyball team has put a premium on practices and preparation leading into the season, according to varsity head coach Tommy Eriksen.

The JV team had three convincing wins to begin their season, defeating Lancaster, 43-21, Rappahannock, 39-9, and Washington and Lee, 60-9.  Head coach Dan Wood and assistant Chris Collins welcome a mixture of returning players combined with a talented and feisty group of eighth graders. Returners to the team included Belle Massimino, Jade Davis, Sierra Davis and Emily Carmine.
