MHS varsity girls fall to Cavs, beat Pointers

The Mathews High School varsity softball team split a pair of games during the past week, falling on the road last Thursday to King William, 13-0, and posting a 17-5 home victory on Tuesday against West Point.

King William

In the King William game, Coach “JJ” Ashberry said the Lady Devils had a great 1-0 game going into the bottom of the fourth inning “that started off with a dropped fly ball and the flood gates of errors sprung wide open.” The Cavaliers scored 12 runs on seven errors in that one inning.

Contributing batters for MHS included McKenzie Bartlett (two singles) and Hannah Davis and Bentlea Lawrence, one single each.

West Point

It was a different story on Tuesday when Mathews beat the Pointers, 17-5, in a five-inning game. Hailey Love took the win, recording 12 strikeouts and also hitting a double and two singles. Collecting multiple hits were Marley Brock (double, two singles), Lawrence (double, two singles), Addison Lowe (three singles), Kylee Swanson (double, single) and Carter Hayes (two singles).

The varsity girls travel to King and Queen today, Thursday, April 23, for a 4:30 p.m. game against the Tigers. The JV and varsity girls host Middlesex on Tuesday, also at 4:30.
