MHS varsity boys defeat Raiders, 75-60

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team posted a win Saturday against the visiting Rappahannock Raiders, falling to Colonial Beach on Monday and suffering its first Tidewater District game on Tuesday at Middlesex.The JV squad, meanwhile, scored a win against Colonial Beach, falling to Rappahannock and Middlesex.

The JV Blue Devils fell to the Chargers, 44-11, in a tough loss on the road. The Chargers took advantage of poor ball handling and pressed Mathews from the beginning. Mathews guard Elton Hudgins had no answer for the superior Middlesex defense. The second quarter prompted an attempted comeback from the Blue Devils, but Middlesex quickly shut this down. The Blue Devils entered halftime trailing, 20-9. The Chargers tightened its defense in the third, preventing Mathews from scoring. Michael Wiatt led the JV Devils with three points, all free throws.
The varsity Devils also fell to Middlesex, losing their first district game in a heartbreaking fashion, 47-4...
