MHS track teams struggle in Northumberland meet

The Mathews High School track and field teams traveled to Northumberland last Thursday to face off with Middlesex and the host Indians; both the MHS boys and girls finished last.

Northumberland won for both the boys (84 points) and girls (51 points), followed by the Middlesex boys (52 points) and girls (50 points) and the Mathews squads (28 points for the boys; 33 for the girls).

The Mathews boys’ 4x800 meter relay team was disqualified on the second leg of the race. Later, star of the distance team, Justin Adams, injured his leg in the 1600 meter run, which prevented him from running the 3200M event, his main event. Cody Kelly was also injured in the triple jump and could not participate in any subsequent meet events.

The girls’ team was handicapped by lack of runners able to compete in distance events. Mathews had no female runners in the 800 meter run, the 4x800 meter relay, or the 3200 meter run. Despite these setbacks, many Mathews team members had strong individual...
