MHS track teams still unbeaten in local meets

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams improved to 7-0 last week, defeating Middlesex, Lancaster and Northampton in a Sept. 20 meet at Middlesex.

The MHS harriers took part in the Maymont Cross Country Festival in Richmond on Saturday. Both teams performed well, achieving fifth-place varsity finishes.

At last week’s Middlesex meet, Kyle Slaughter and Nancy Barnhardt again led the Blue Devils, with second- and third-place finishes, respectively.

Slaughter finished 14 seconds behind the Chargers’ top finisher in 17:47, while Barnhardt (21:47) came in four seconds behind the Chargers’ first- and second-place finishers.

The boys’ varsity squad hushed their competitors by taking the victory with 36 points, beating out Lancaster (45), Northampton (73) and the host Chargers (80).
