MHS track teams place third at quad meet

The Mathews High School track teams traveled back to Northumberland last Wednesday to take on the Essex Trojans, Washington and Lee Eagles, and the NHS Indians in their second quad meet in two weeks.

Both the boys and the girls managed third-place finishes overall, with 46 points for the girls and 38 for the boys, ahead of W&L (girls with 24, boys with 33), but falling behind Northumberland (48 for girls, 63 for boys) and Essex.

In the girls, the high jump was controlled by junior Sharnice Williams, who took second with a height of 4’4″; freshman Shyanne Gordon, who was third with 4’4″; and senior Sabrina Myers, who was fifth with 4’2″. Gordon also won the 100m hurdles and placed fourth overall in the 300m intermediate hurdles.

Also running hurdles was sophomore Vanessa Forrest, who got second with a time of 59.3 seconds in the 300m hurdles and fourth in the 100m hurdles. Meanwhile, Myers finished the 1-mile run in fourth place with a time of 6:26, alongside senior Nancy Barnhardt, who got third with a time of 6:17, as well as a win in the 2-mile-run with a time of 13:20.

In field events, senior Amber Cantrell took third in the discus with a 72’7″ throw, while Casey Kelly took fifth in both the discus and the shot put, with throws of 71’10″ and 24’1″, respectively. In addition, the girls’ 4×400 relay team won first place.

 

For the boys, freshman Justin Adams continued a winning streak in the 2-mile run with a time of 11:29, alongside senior Keinan Triplett, who got a 14:23 run. In the 1-mile, sophomore Sam Jasinski and junior Nick Brown pulled off second and fourth places, respectively, with times of 5:19 and 5:36, while freshman Nicholas Mann pulled off a seventh-place finish with a time of 5:53.

Newcomer Deondre Foster pulled off third place in the high jump with a distance of 5’8″, and in the 400m, with a time of 53.8 seconds, alongside senior Ian Smith, who took fifth in the high jump and won the 400m with a time of 52.9 seconds. Also, Brown, Mann and senior Jonah West took fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively, in the 800m, with times of 2:32, 2:39 and 2:41. In addition, the boys’ 4x400m relay team won its event.

The MHS track teams returned Tuesday to Northumberland for their third and final meet against the NHS Indians and the Washington & Lee Eagles. Results were not available at press time.

MHS teams will travel to Gloucester High School on Friday to participate in their final invitational of this season, the Gloucester Invitational, with the hopes of qualifying for a spot in the regional, or even state, tournaments.
