MHS track teams place second in district tourney

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ track teams both placed second at last Thursday’s Tidewater District Tournament, which was held at Charles City High School.

West Point swept the team rankings, winning the boys’ tournament with 197 points and the girls’ competition with 109. Mathews placed second with 90 and 88 points, respectively. King William and the host Panthers placed third in the rankings for boys and girls.

Among the girls, Zoe Camp (3,200-meter run, 15:26.5), Sarah Taylor (both, the 300m hurdles, 55.04 seconds, and high jump, 4’10”) and Joice Small (shot put, 30’11”) placed first in their events.

Cameron Stearns (1600m run, 4:31.64, and 3200m run, 10:41.4), Ja’Marri Henderson (110m hurdles, 16.13 seconds; 300m hurdles, 42.44 seconds; long jump, 19’7.5”) won their events.

Also qualifying for today’s 1A Region A championships were the boys’ and girls’ 4x800 relay teams; the girls’ 4x100 relay team, and the boys’ 4x400; Cora Rowe and Haley Hoell in the girls’...
