MHS track teams place first, second in conference meet

The Mathews High School girls’ track team placed first in the Conference 42 track and field championship, which was held last week at Charles City High School. The MHS boys’ team, meanwhile, came in a close second to Middlesex.

The Mathews girls (114 points) defeated West Point (112), Middlesex (101), King and Queen (98) and Charles City (one point). In the boys’ competition, Middlesex (117) won the meet, followed by the Blue Devils (113), Charles City (112), West Point (91) and King and Queen (50).

The Mathews boys were the only team in the conference to field pole vault athletes; unfortunately none of them qualified for regionals.

For the girls, Kate van Emmerik won conference championships in both the 1600 and the 3200 meter runs with times of 6:00.24 and 13:04.19 respectively. Van Emmerik pulled out an amazing finish in the 1600 meter run when she trailed Leigh Harrow of Middlesex by 20 meters until the last 100 meters of the race where she showed her endurance...
