MHS track teams place 2nd, 4th at Northumberland meet

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ track teams traveled to Northumberland High School last Wednesday for their first regular meet after spring break. The night culminated with a second-place finish for the girls, with 63 points, and a rough fourth place for the boys, with a score of 31.

For the girls, senior Nancy Barnhardt took first in the one-mile run, but dropped to second in the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:37. Freshman Shyanne Gordon also continued to make a mark in the hurdles and the long jump, while seniors Amber Cantrell and Sabrina Myers, alongside sophomore Veronica Cummings, continued to show improvement in the discus.

 

For the boys, senior Ian Smith pulled off a new personal and season best in the 400m with a time of 52.2 seconds, as well as third in the 200m and pointing in the high jump.
