MHS track competes in region, state meets

The Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams competed recently in the 1A East Regional Championships and the VHSL state championships. While the teams did not place high in either meet, the Blue Devils had a number of strong individual performances in both.

On May 28, the teams traveled to Sussex Central High School to take part in the 1A East Region competition. Overall, the MHS boys placed fourth with 45 points, while the girls finished in 10th place with 25 points.

Notable girls who qualified for the state meet were: the 4x800m relay team (Lizzie Stokes, Lauren Bland, Skylar Lewis and Tiffany Condron), who placed ninth with a time of 12:02; Alyssa Curko, who came in fourth in the 400m dash with a time of 1:06; Bland, who completed the  800m run in 2:42 for fourth place; Rileigh Betz, who placed fifth in the 1,600m run and sixth in the 100m hurdles with times of  6:21 and 18.42; Ellie Gale, who came in third in the 100m hurdles with a time of...
