MHS track caps successful season at state meet

The Mathews High School track and field team capped a successful season with strong performances in the Region 1A championship on Wednesday, May 24, at Charles City and the VHSL Class 1 state championships on June 2-3 at James Madison University.

As a team, the MHS boys placed 10th overall in Class 1 with 25 points, while the MHS girls came in 14th with 17 team points. In her final meet as a Blue Devil, senior Sarah Taylor won the state high jump with a leap of 5’2”.Regionals

The Blue Devils had a very successful year and the growth shown by the athletes was incredible. Senior Sarah Taylor won the girls’ 100- and 300-meter hurdles, as well as girls’ high jump. Nora Suthard placed fourth in the girls’ long jump and triple jump.

Sophomores Seth James and Gavin Dustin placed second and fourth, respectively, in the boys’ 1,600-meter run, with James running a personal best 4:57.55. Jon Jenkins placed second in the boys’ 3,200-meter, continuing his consistent season. Donovan Forres...
