MHS track athletes compete in regionals

Mathews High School athletes competed in last Thursday’s VHSL Class 1A Region A track and field championships, with the boys’ team placing sixth with 36 points, and the girls finishing in eighth place with 31 team points.

West Point and Lancaster were the top two teams. West Point girls placed first with 92 points, followed by Lancaster at second with 59 points. The order was flipped for the boys, with Lancaster winning the meet with 108 points, followed by West Point (68 points) in the regional championships held at Sussex Central High School.

Lauren Bland was the only Blue Devil to win an event, taking first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.88 seconds. Teammate Rileigh Betz took second in the same event, crossing the finish line in 19.03 seconds. Betz and Bland placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 300-meter hurdles with time of 51.77 and 57.77 seconds. Kennedy Maultsby placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 33’9”.
