Numerous members of the Mathews High School track and field team qualified for this year’s state meet following their performance at last week’s regional championships at Charles City. In addition to athletes from Mathews and Charles City, the May 27 Group 1A competition also included teams from Chincoteague, Essex, King and Queen, Lancaster, Middlesex, Northampton, Northumberland, Rappahannock and West Point. Mathews girls Starting with the girls, Elizabeth Moore placed fifth in the 800-meter dash and second in the 1,600-meter run. Allean “Beanie” Rowe placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run. Jordan Sadeg placed seventh in the 100-meter hurdles, seventh in the 300-meter hurdles, seventh in the long jump, and seventh in the triple jump. Nora Suthard placed third in the 300-meter hurdles, fourth in the long jump, and third in the triple jump. Shalen Deese placed fourth in the high jump.
