MHS to hold Al DeWitt Night on April 27

Former Mathews High School baseball coach Al DeWitt will be honored by the school before the start of the Friday, April 27 Mathews-Middlesex varsity baseball game.

A 1969 graduate of MHS and a three-sport athlete with the Blue Devils, DeWitt served as head baseball coach and athletic director from 1990 to 2007. He hung up his cleats after 16 seasons, accumulating 217 wins on the diamond.

Perhaps his biggest accomplishment was guiding the 2004 Mathews team to a 23-3 record and the VHSL Group A state title. DeWitt was the Region A Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2004 and the Group A State Coach of the Year for 2004.

DeWitt retired in 2010 after 34 years in education.

"It is a pleasure to have ‘Al Dewitt Night’ on April 27," said MHS athletic director Paul White. "Al served the Mathews community and state of Virginia as an educator, administrator and coach until his retirement. Al was dedicated and professional in all perspectives of his career. Whether it was teaching history, coaching baseball or football, or working as the athletic director, Al gave his very best."

Friends, colleagues and former players are invited to join DeWitt in the celebration. The April 27 baseball game is scheduled to begin at approximately 7 p.m., immediately after the jayvee contest.
