MHS tennis wins state doubles title

Mathews High School girls’ tennis doubles partners Morgan Johnson and Ashley Hudgins earned the title of state champions on Friday at Radford University by winning the 2016 VHSL Group 1A State Doubles Tournament.

This marks the first time that Mathews has won a state title in girls’ tennis. Johnson and Hudgins, winner of the 1A East Region Doubles Tournament, faced the loser of the West Region, Sophie Dryden and Maggie Patterson of Parry McCluer, at 9 a.m. on Friday.

Johnson and Hudgins won, 6-3, 6-1, earning the Lady Devils a spot in the state finals.

At noon the same day, Johnson and Hudgins played the winners of the 1A West region, Samantha Brooks and Logan Graham of Radford High School, in the tournament finals. Johnson and Hudgins played smart and consistent with aggressive serves and net shots to defeat Brooks and Graham in split sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Over the past three seasons, Hudgins and Johnson amassed an incredible 41-4 doubles record.
