MHS tennis wins conference title

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team blanked the Middlesex Chargers on May 10 to earn the Conference 42 team title.

Top-seeded singles player Morgan Johnson started off the match by shutting out Hannah Jackson, 6-0, 6-0. Ashley Hudgins, at #2 seed, beat Bryana Rios, 6-2, 6-0.

Rachel Stewart, Maddie Brown and Emma Wood, the third-, fourth- and fifth-seeded Lady Devils won by identical 6-0, 6-0 margins, and sixth-seed Madelyn Johnson nearly did as well, beating Maddie Wood, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles play, Morgan Johnson and Hudgins defeated Jackson and Rios, 6-2, 6-2. Stewart and Brown went on to win 8-1 in #2 doubles, and Wood and Madelyn Johnson at #3 doubles finished the sweep, 8-0.

In exhibition matches, Anne Stewart and Chloe Sanderson played extremely well to earn an 8-0 win. Sarah Brown and Ali Haynes won a hard-fought 7-5 match.
