MHS tennis wins all three TD titles

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team picked up the Tidewater District team, singles and doubles titles after going unbeaten in district matches.

Mathews clinched the titles after shutting out West Point on Friday, 9-0. Top-seed Aly Collins earned the Tidewater District singles title, teaming up with her twin sister Amy to claim the district doubles title for a second year in a row.

The Mathews girls, individually and as a team, will advance to the Group A tournament, beginning May 29.

In Friday’s West Point match, Aly Collins put on a tremendous comeback to win the singles title. After losing the first set 3-6, she was down 0-5 in the second set with her opponent needing only to win one more game to claim victory. Aly showed determination, winning 12 straight games to defeat Sarah Sheffield, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.
