MHS tennis team advances to state semis

While the Mathews High School girls’ tennis team didn’t win the Region 1A East championship, the Lady Devils did earn a trip to Radford to play in the first round of the state tournament.

The MHS girls blanked the Middlesex Chargers, 5-0, last Wednesday in the regional semifinals, then fell to Rappahannock in Friday’s regional title match, 5-1.

The top two teams in each region advance to the state tournament. Mathews will face Radford High School either Monday or Tuesday; if the girls win, they will return to Radford the following weekend to play in the team finals in the VHSL Spring Jubilee.

The doubles team of Maddie Brown and Madelyn Johnson were scheduled to travel to Franklin yesterday and today to compete in the Region 1A East Doubles Tournament. Also, Brown will play singles, beginning her quest to become Region 1A Singles Champion. Middlesex
