MHS tennis recaptures team regional title

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team, last year’s Region 1A East runner-up, got its revenge on Rappahannock, defeating last year’s regional champion, 5-4, on Friday to regain the title it last held in 2016.

To get to the regional championship match, Mathews soundly defeated West Point last Wednesday, 5-0.

Starting with number-one doubles, Lady Devils Chloe Sanderson and Sarah Brown rallied against Zoie Browder and Dani Gonzalez, to win 6-2, 6-3. At second-seed doubles, Anne Stewart and Avery Betz battled Pointer twins Kelsey and Meghan Bantel and pulled through with another win for Mathews by a final score of 6-2, 6-1. Mathews gained the third out of five wins necessary when Caroline Evans and Connie Johnson beat Dianna Haraway and Mattie Britt, 6-3, 6-3.
