he Mathews High School girls’ tennis team, runners up in the Region 1A tournament, will be traveling to Region 1B champion William Campbell High School in Campbell County (south of Lynchburg) on Friday for the VHSL team state quarterfinals.
If Mathews wins, the team will advance to the state semifinals on Monday, with the Class 1 state championships to be held next Thursday, June 12 at Liberty University.
Meanwhile, the MHS singles and doubles players did not advance beyond regional competition. Top-seeded MHS singles player Lyla Duff lost in the singles semifinals last Thursday at Indian Creek Country Club in Kilmarnock. Duff and Liberti Carter represented Mathews in doubles play, losing to Lancaster in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-2.
