MHS tennis finishes regular season with 10-2 record

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team closed out the regular season last week, blanking the Middlesex Chargers, 9-0, at home on May 9 to improve to 10-2 on the season.

The Lady Devils begin post-season play on Monday. Mathews, the second-seed squad in the Region A team tournament will host Franklin, starting at 3 p.m. Team semifinals will be played next Wednesday, May 23, with finals on Friday, May 25.

Middlesex

Mathews had little trouble with the visiting Chargers, with all six singles players and the three doubles teams winning handily. At #1 seed, Lady Devil Chloe Sanderson faced Hannah Jackson. While Jackson had some great shots, Sanderson was a human backboard, eventually winning 6-2, 6-2. Sarah Brown at number two, played Bryna Rios. Brown’s strong serves and aggressive net play were too much to handle, as she won quickly with scores of 6-2, 6-0.
