MHS tennis falls to York, Warhill, crushes New Kent

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team opened its 2018 season facing tough competition from larger Class 3 and Class 4 schools, losing a pair of close matches to York and Warhill and defeating New Kent.

In the March 8 season opener, the Mathews girls traveled to York High School, falling to the Falcons, 5-4.

In singles, top-seeded Chloe Sanderson played against Isabella Mock and lost, 8-6. Sarah Brown, who played at number two, lost to Emi McCreery, but managed to get five games on her before losing, 8-5. 

At third seed, Anne Stewart used consistent strokes to earn the first singles win against York’s Cassie Watts, 9-7. Number four, Avery Betz, fought a long and grueling match against Chelsea Zizzi. Trailing 2-6, Betz rallied to earn a big 9-8 win (7-4 in the tiebreaker). Caroline Evans, the Lady Devils’ five seed, played Abby Castro and though Evans was very persistent, she lost, 8-3.
