MHS tennis fails to advance to state tournament

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis program advanced to the team regional semifinals, doubles regional semifinals and singles regional finals, but unfortunately did not advance to the state tournament.

On Tuesday, May 28, MHS top-seeded singles player Avery Betz played in the Region 1A contest, winning the first round over Northampton’s Hannah Wyatt by scores of 6-2, 6-2, advancing her to the semifinals against Windsor’s Victoria Johnson.

The match with Johnson went three sets, with Betz losing the first set, 7-5, bouncing back to win the next two, 6-4, 6-1. In the final match of a grueling day, with the heat index hovering around 100, Betz faced Rappahannock’s Laura Ambrose in the singles championship. Betz did not give up through the entire match, but senior Ambrose defeated Betz, 6-1 and 6-3.

The Region 1A doubles tournament was held the following day, as Betz teamed up with Caroline Evans. They won the first round, beating Middlesex’s Hannah Jacks...
