MHS tennis drops close match to Rappahannock, 5-4

Members of the Mathews High School tennis team had a long and tough match last Wednesday, edged by Rappahannock, 5-4.

Starting off the match in singles, top-seeded player Chloe Sanderson faced off against Laura Ambrose. Sanderson got off to a strong start and maintained her lead using smart consistent shots throughout the match to win, 8-6. Sarah Brown, at the number two spot, battled tirelessly against Mackenzie Straughan but lost, 8-4. 

At number three, undefeated Anne Stewart combined consistent serves and ball placement to win very long points defeating her opponent, Taylor Vaughn, 8-4. Avery Betz, playing at four seed, was up against Rappahannock’s Sarah Hinson. Hinson was no match for Betz’s hard groundstrokes and skidding serves. Continuing her undefeated winning streak, Betz won the match swiftly by a final score of 8-1.
