MHS tennis defeats 3A New Kent

The Mathews High School girls’ tennis team took a 7-2 win on March 27 over the New Kent Trojans.

In singles play, top-seeded player Maddie Brown used topspin against her opponent, Haley Ashford, and breezed through her match, 6-0, 6-0. Seeded at number two, Madelyn Johnson played an outstanding match against Reshyra Jadooram. Fast-paced serves and exceptional backhand assisted her with a win of 6-3, 6-1.

Third-seeded player Chloe Sanderson showed no mercy against her opponent Rachel Phelps. Sanderson’s consistent strokes and patient mindset resulted in a score of 6-0, 6-0. Fourth-seed Sarah Brown beat her opponent, Vivian Sanchez 6-1, 6-3 with aggressiveness and topspin.

At the number-five spot, Ali Haynes played a very tough match against New Kent’s Mackenzie Taylor. Hayne’s took the first set, 6-0. During the second set, however, Haynes lost 3-6. As a result of splitting sets, a 10-point super tiebreaker was played for the third set. Haynes played well; how...
